Mattress Dimensions Guide

December 14, 2011

Mattress Dimensions Guide and why it’s best to have a bigger bed!

One of the first decision to be made when thinking about and researching a new mattress is what mattress dimensions are available and what size is best for you.  Below are the most common sizes found in America, but we can order mattresses with custom dimensions for many of our brands.

It is very important to consider the amount of actual space you will need and who will be using the mattress now and in the future.  Your new mattress should be wider and longer than the amount of room you need to fit comfortably.  This is because when sleeping we don’t stay in one place.  We move around throughout the night, usually upwards of 60 times per night while asleep.  So, it is important to have ample room to accommodate that motion.  This is especially important when sleeping with a partner.  One of the most common causes of reduced levels of deep sleep is the motion of your partner and chain-reaction of movement between partner’s that interrupts the deepest levels of sleep.

The recommended size for two adults to sleep on is a queen or king size bed.

Below are images and a general guide to help you make the best decision:

Twin 39”x 75” (inches)

Twin size is generally made for one child or one adult sleeper. As many parents may know from helping a young child to sleep, a twin size really is a one person bed. If you are a taller adult you may want to consider a Twin-XL which will give you added length. (see below). Twin (also referred to a ‘single’) is great for smaller guest spaces, bunkbeds, and daybeds.

Twin-XL 39”x 80” (inches)

Twin-XL size (Extra-Long) is 5 inches longer than the standard twin sized mattress. This size is great for taller youth or single adults over about 5′ 8″. It commonly used in college dorm rooms since it fits well in smaller rooms, but can accommodate a taller individual. Twin-XL is the same length as a queen or king, In fact two of them side by side is about equal to a king size.

Full 54”x 75” (inches)

Full size, also know as double or standard size, really is not enough for two full-sized adults. It was commonly used for two adults 30 – 40 years ago when the homes and bedrooms were built much smaller. Now it is usually purchased for single person use and sometimes for guest rooms. For two adults it is a tight fit for everyday use, especially for taller adults as it is the same length as a twin size. Two adults sleeping on a full size is equivalent to each person sleeping on a crib mattress (27 inches of sleep space). Most people with a sleeping partner opt for the queen size or king size. Full can sometimes be special ordered in extra long for taller and/or larger single adults.

Queen 60”x 80” (inches)

Queen size is the most popular size sold. Ideal for two adults who don’t want a king size in order to save living space.  Also great for those who just like to spread out.

King 76”x 80” (inches)

King size (also known as an eastern king) is the same length as a queen but much wider (16 inches). If you have the space it offers the most room for couples and is ideal for an uninterrupted night’s sleep.  King size beds are also great if you have kids or pets who like to share your bed. For very tall people you can also special order a California-King which is a 72” x 84”.  (Commonly ordered and available within a couple days at The Bedding Experts)

Crib 28″ x 52″ (inches)

Crib mattress sizes are usally 28″ by 52″ and are obviously made for very young children and babies.
